NGA Tearline: North Korea's Komdok Mining Region

Developed in Partnership with Stimson/38 North

This report analyzes the Komdok mining region and suggests that most upgrades have been residential construction and other “band-aid” improvements rather than investments in infrastructure, energy provisioning, and flood control. Until these more substantive measures are in place, this mining region will continue to under-perform. Magnesite, zinc, lead, silver, and gold are mined in the Komdok region worth billions with potential for greater wealth generation.
