Shortly after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and subsequent Taliban take-over in August 2021, the Taliban banned foreign currency exchanges in November 2021. Limited foreign currency exchange options, a poor business climate, and deep poverty in most of Afghanistan increases the likelihood of gem and mineral exchanges as a source of wealth for citizens and a hard currency source for the Taliban.
